If you're sending parcels regularly, whether as an e-commerce business, a marketplace seller or just someone who ships the odd item on Vinted or eBay, the question of where to buy parcel packaging comes up sooner or later. The answer depends on what you're sending, how often you're sending it, and how much you want to spend per parcel.
This guide covers the full picture: what parcel packaging actually covers, where to buy it in the UK, what to look for from each source, and which options work best for different types of sender.
What counts as parcel packaging?
Parcel packaging covers everything used to contain, protect and seal a parcel for transit. That includes the outer container, whether it's a bag or a box, plus any tape used to seal it, void fill to protect the contents, and labels to identify it for the courier or postal service.
The right combination depends on what you're shipping. Soft goods like clothing, accessories and books travel well in a polythene mailing bag with no additional protection needed. Fragile or breakable items need a rigid box with appropriate cushioning inside. Many businesses use both depending on the product being shipped.
Here is a practical overview of the core parcel packaging types and what each one is used for.
Mailing bags
Self-seal polythene bags suitable for clothing, soft goods, flat-packed items and anything that doesn't need rigid protection. Lightweight, waterproof and available in a range of sizes. Grey is the most popular colour for e-commerce and marketplace sellers. Mr Bags stocks a full range of sizes including small options for t-shirts and accessories through to large bags for coats and bulky garments, in grey and a range of other colours including blue, green, pink and purple. Browse the full range on our mailing bags page.
Cardboard boxes
For anything that needs rigid protection: electronics, homeware, candles, ceramics, glassware, multi-item orders and anything fragile or breakable. Corrugated cardboard boxes are available in single wall, strong single wall and double wall construction depending on the weight and fragility of the contents. Mr Bags stocks Royal Mail-compatible postal boxes as well as general single wall and strong single wall boxes for everyday e-commerce shipping. All are supplied flat-packed, made from recycled board and quick to assemble. See the full range on our cardboard boxes page.
Packaging tape
Used to seal cardboard boxes securely. Options include clear tape, brown parcel tape, fragile warning tape and paper kraft tape for brands that want a plastic-free, fully recyclable finish. For heavier boxes, 75mm wide tape provides more coverage and holding force than standard 48mm. Mr Bags stocks all of these through our packaging tape range.
Thermal shipping labels
Labels used to print courier and address information for dispatch. The most widely used size for UK courier platforms including Royal Mail Click and Drop, Evri and DPD is 4x6 inches (100x150mm). Mr Bags stocks this format along with other sizes including 4x4, 3x2 and fanfold options. See the full range on our labels page.
Garment bags
CPP polypropylene garment bags with a self-seal strip, used for folded clothing and textiles. A step up in presentation from standard mailing bags, suitable for boutiques, fashion brands and clothing businesses that want a cleaner unboxing experience without the cost of a full box. Available through our garment bags collection.
Grip seal bags
Resealable polythene bags for small parts, accessories, samples and components. Used widely in retail, craft, and fulfilment operations where small items need to be contained clearly and consistently. Available clear, printed and in colour through our grip seal bags range.
Pallet wrap
Stretch film used to wrap palletised loads for storage or transport. Available in mini and full rolls depending on the volume and scale of the operation. Stocked through our pallet wrap collection.
Where to buy parcel packaging in the UK
There are several options, and they differ significantly in range, pricing and convenience depending on your needs.
Specialist packaging suppliers
The best option for most regular senders and businesses. A dedicated packaging supplier stocks a much wider range than any general retailer, offers better pricing especially at volume, and tends to have more consistent stock availability. You also get the benefit of dealing with people who understand packaging rather than a generalist retailer with packaging as one small category among thousands.
Mr Bags is a UK packaging supplier based in Manchester, stocking mailing bags, cardboard boxes, packaging tape, labels, garment bags, grip seal bags and pallet wrap. All stock is held in the UK and the majority of orders are dispatched the same day when placed before 5pm Monday to Friday. Free DPD next day delivery is available on orders over £100 to UK mainland addresses, with a 3pm cut-off for next day. For local businesses and individuals in Manchester, click and collect is available from the warehouse at 10A Locket Street, M8 8EE, open Monday to Friday 10am to 7pm and Sunday 11am to 6pm.
The full range is available at mrbags.co.uk/collections.
The Post Office
Stocks a small range of mailing bags and some postal boxes in limited sizes. Useful if you need parcel packaging urgently and have no other nearby option. The unit price is high relative to buying from a packaging supplier, and the range is narrow. Post Office packaging is priced for convenience rather than value and is not a practical ongoing source for anyone sending parcels regularly.
Stationery and office supply retailers
WHSmith, Ryman and similar retailers stock some parcel packaging, including small packs of mailing bags, padded envelopes and occasionally boxes. Again, the range is limited, the pack sizes are small and the unit pricing is higher than a dedicated supplier. These retailers are useful in the same way as the Post Office: for one-off urgent purchases, not for running a regular shipping operation.
Online marketplaces
Amazon and similar platforms carry a wide range of parcel packaging from various sellers, and competitive pricing is available, particularly for mailing bags bought in larger quantities. The variable is quality. Not all marketplace listings specify material thickness, board grade or other relevant specifications, and quality across different sellers can be inconsistent. Buying from a dedicated supplier gives you more confidence in what you're getting, particularly for items like boxes where board quality directly affects how well your parcels arrive.
Where to get parcel packaging near me
If you need parcel packaging today rather than waiting for delivery, local options include the Post Office, WHSmith, Ryman and trade packaging suppliers or business cash-and-carry outlets. For Manchester-based businesses and individuals, click and collect from the Mr Bags warehouse is available with no minimum order. For everyone else, next-day delivery from an online supplier is often the most practical answer to needing packaging quickly.
What to look for when buying parcel packaging
A few things are worth checking regardless of where you buy.
For mailing bags, the key specifications are the internal dimensions, which tell you the actual usable space, and the micron thickness, which determines how robust the bag is. A minimum of 50 microns is a reasonable baseline for standard clothing and soft goods. Below that, the risk of splitting in transit increases.
For cardboard boxes, the board grade matters. Single wall is fine for lighter, non-fragile goods. Strong single wall handles medium-weight items and most e-commerce products. Double wall is for heavy or fragile goods that need maximum protection. Royal Mail-compatible sizes matter if you're using Royal Mail Tracked and want to stay within the size brackets for specific service tiers.
For tape, match the width and strength to the box weight. A 48mm tape is adequate for lighter boxes. Heavier cartons benefit from 75mm tape applied in an H pattern across the base and top. If you're using kraft boxes or have eco-focused branding, paper kraft tape gives a fully recyclable finish and bonds well to corrugated board.
For labels, make sure the size you buy is compatible with your thermal printer. The 4x6 inch format is the most universal for UK courier labels, but check your printer specifications before ordering.
How to recycle parcel packaging
This is covered in full in our guide to recycling mailing bags and plastic shipping bags, but the short version by material type is as follows.
Cardboard boxes are fully recyclable at kerbside. Break them flat and remove any tape before putting them in the recycling bin, though in practice most UK councils will accept cardboard with tape attached as the tape is removed during processing.
Polythene mailing bags are a soft plastic and cannot go in the kerbside recycling bin in most areas currently. Take them to a supermarket soft plastics collection point. From March 2027, kerbside flexible plastics collections are due to be mandatory across local authorities in England under the government's Simpler Recycling programme.
Kraft paper tape and paper bags are recyclable with cardboard and paper at kerbside. Plastic tape and bubble wrap follow the same soft plastics route as mailing bags.
Trade and bulk orders
For businesses with high shipping volumes, consistent supply at predictable pricing matters as much as the per-unit cost. Mr Bags supplies e-commerce brands, fulfilment centres, warehouses, prep centres and retailers across the UK. Bulk and pallet quantities are available across core product lines, and trade pricing is available for regular orders.
